Autumn is upon us, awakening our cravings for everything pumpkin flavored. Remember waiting impatiently at the kids’ table for someone to finally cut into dessert after a long holiday meal? The smooth, rich pumpkin filling topped with silky whipped cream was our long-awaited reward for good behavior. But those days are over. We are now responsible adults who rise early to run the extra mile, request our dressings on the side, and opt for nourishing quinoa over buttery mashed potatoes.
But we still want pie. Which is why we created the fall-inspired Pumpkin Smash Smoothie in the first place. The delicious better-for-you treat satisfies our cravings without sacrificing our good behavior. Made with real pumpkin and seasoned with cinnamon and nutmeg, the Pumpkin Smash smoothie never fails to stir up fond childhood memories of grandma’s homemade pumpkin pie. And no matter how fast we drink it, we’re still conducting ourselves as disciplined adults because our sweet treat is a natural source of vitamin A and an easy way to obtain calcium and protein.
Not convinced? We get it. Our years of dietary restraint have taught us that if it’s too good to be true, it often is. So we offer a “Make it Light” version for the more suspicious pie lovers out there. Made with 1/3 fewer sugar, calories and carbs, it nevertheless reminds us to call grandma after the first heavenly sip.
Let’s stop depriving ourselves unnecessarily, shall we? Continue to Live Fruitfully™ during the tempting holiday season with the return of the much-anticipated Pumpkin Smash smoothie, available for a limited time only.

Fruit sugar is Mother Nature’s way of making nutritious foods like fruits and vegetables taste great. The sugar found in fruits and vegetables is commonly referred to as fructose.
But don’t confuse fructose in healthy fruits and vegetables with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Here are some things to keep in mind to better understand sugars in food.
- Fructose and HFCS are not the same thing, despite both having “fructose” in the name. Fructose is the natural sugar that comes primarily from fruit, vegetables and honey.
- Among the highest dietary sources of fructose are honey, molasses, maple syrup and fruit juice.
- All- natural fruit sugar and sweetness comes from fructose. Added sugars are usually from sucrose (table sugar) or HFCS.
- Like anything we eat, fructose is best consumed in balance and moderation with other foods that supply the nutrition we need to be at our best.
So the next time you drink a beverage made from fruit without added sugar or bite into an apple or grape, know that sweet goodness comes naturally – from fructose.

Calories you get each day from foods and beverages you choose can come packed with nutritional benefits. We call them nutrient-rich. Or they can be empty calories — foods and beverages that primarily deliver calories without nutritional goodness.
What food items offer the greatest nutrition? Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, legume, nuts, healthy fats and low-fat dairy.
What satisfies our cravings for sweets or carbs but offers little nutritionally? Soft drinks, desserts, candy and processed foods made from white flour.
Can we get both great taste and good nutrition at the same time? Absolutely. Here are some happy examples:
- Fruits and Vegetables – these are a slam-dunk for good nutrition and great taste. Loaded with good-for-you nutrients, low in calories and the perfect foods to fill you up without filling you out.
- Low fat Yogurt – great creamy taste, often with fruit too. Plus dairy is naturally nutrient dense.
- Sandwiches made with whole grain breads – this great choice can come with lean meat protein plus vegetables.
- Pasta dishes – carbs are your most important source of energy and pasta is a great option – just select the whole grain varieties. And try to go with tomato or vegetable based sauces instead of heavy cream sauces.
- Fruit and vegetable smoothies – whole fruit, vegetable juices along with great taste and all those vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants in a cup.
- Nuts – these little gems can deliver all three of the main nutrients we need — carbs, protein and fat (yes, some fats are a good thing).
What you eat and drink each day will impact how you perform physically and mentally. So while salty fried snacks may be tasty it won’t deliver the nutrition you need to power your day.

You might agree it’s important to keep your brain in tip-top shape. Did you know there’s one (yes, just one) nutrient your brain uses daily to fuel itself? It’s called glucose. And one of the best natural sources of glucose in your diet is fruit. Fruit is a tasty and easy-to-consume supply of this important nutrient to help your head stay in the game.
What is glucose anyway? It’s a carbohydrate – more specifically, a type of sugar. Fructose (fruit sugar), sucrose (cane sugar) or lactose (milk dairy sugar), all natural sugars contain glucose.
Remember your brain does not store glucose. It’s transferred to the brain by the bloodstream. So when glucose is in short supply, you’re not at your best. It’s important to keep replenishing it through the day.
